A file locking bar is an external security device that can be used to replace a missing or obsolete cabinet lock or provide additional security for an existing one.
In many cases, a file locking bar is the simplest way to restore security to a filing cabinet when an original replacement lock is no longer available. It can also be used alongside a working lock to add another layer of protection.

Will a File Locking Bar Fit My Filing Cabinet?

A file locking bar attaches to the vertical strip of metal beside the drawers, not the drawers themselves.
It can be installed on either the left or right side of the cabinet.
Example of a compatible cabinet:

If your cabinet drawers extend all the way to the outside edge of the cabinet, there is no place to mount the locking bar.
Many fireproof filing cabinets are also not compatible, as their construction does not provide a suitable mounting surface.

When Is a File Locking Bar a Good Option?
A file locking bar may be the right solution if:
- Your cabinet lock is broken and a replacement is unavailable.
- Your cabinet uses an obsolete lock that is no longer manufactured.
- You want to add another layer of security to an existing cabinet.
- You need to secure all of the drawers with a single external locking device.
How Does a File Locking Bar Work?
Once installed, the locking bar covers the fronts of the drawers, preventing them from opening until the bar is unlocked and removed or swung aside.
Depending on your needs, it can be used:
- In place of the original cabinet lock when a replacement isn't available.
- Alongside the existing lock for increased security.
