Keyed Alike vs. Keyed Different: What’s the Difference?

When ordering locks, you may see the terms keyed alike and keyed different.

These simply describe how the locks operate with keys.

🔑 What Does Keyed Alike Mean?

Keyed alike means multiple locks use the same key.

  • One key will open all locks in the set
  • Locks share the same lock number and manufacturer

Ideal if you want simple access with fewer keys

🔐 What Does Keyed Different Mean?

Keyed different means each lock uses its own unique key.

  • Every lock has a different lock number
  • Each lock requires a separate key

Ideal if you want separate access for different locks

🔍 Example

  • A 101E lock and a 102E lock are keyed different
  • Two 101E locks would be keyed alike

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Locks must be from the same manufacturer and series to be keyed alike
  • Not all locks can be converted to keyed alike if they are different brands or types
  • To match locks, you may need the same lock core and a control key
